I'm heading to Thailand next week and will be meeting up with friends at some point. Any suggestions on the use of cell phone so I can get in touch with people? Buy one with a calling card? Rent one? Bring my own?

Hi,
you can bring your own self phone and buy a prepaid card there. If you are going to the north I would suggest Happy, is one of the few who has reception there. You can't buy this one at the airport but a phone shop anywhere should do.
